Healing Hands Ranch Booth A Big Success!

We are often invited to churches, conferences and events to promote Healing Hands Ranch (HHR) so that other people can become aware of our new ministry. In order to effectively promote HHR, we purchased a booth that would make a positive impact to the public. Initially the booth just had photographs of HHR and a very basic banner. After much work, you can see the new and improved booth in the photo shown here. The new booth has a colorful banner with our logo, the HHR mission statement, a collage of photographs and a TV with a built in DVD player that continously plays a video of our Executive Director, Scott DeLoach giving a virtual tour of Healing Hands Ranch. The two panels of written information contains our Deaf Prison Ministries Network mission statement, the services that HHR will offer, and Deaf Prison Ministries Network's strategic plan.

This new and improved booth was first presented at the Southern Baptist Conference for the Deaf earlier this month and many people stopped by and visited our booth. We received a very positive feedback because 30 people signed up for our e-newsletter! We would like to thank Molly Prescott, John Wunsch, Bill Hornbeak, Jim Dermon, Dan Mustain, Don Payne and Arthur Craig for their contribution to make the booth a tremendous success! If you would like to have the HHR booth displayed at your next event, please contact us with your request.

Being A Role Model

Several years ago while I was teaching bible study to a group of Deaf men at the Dixon Correctional Center in Dixon, Illinois, I told the men that I felt very inadequate to be their teacher. I confessed to them that I (not in a bragging way, but in a honest and open way) had never done any illegal activity or had gotten into trouble with the police. Because of that, I had a difficult time identifying with them because they had "darker" backgrounds than I had.

While I was expressing my concerns, one of the Deaf prisoners slowly raised his hand and said "please don't ever say that!" I was shocked he would say this to me and asked him "why?" He said... "because you are my role model. You have the life that I should have had but I had no one to show me how to live for Christ. Now that you are here, you are my role model of how I should live." I learned that many of the Deaf men in prison came from broken homes and did not have good male role models growing up. As a result, many of them were in prison for lifestyles that they thought was necessary in order to survive.

I was very humbled by that experience and never again questioned my ability to reach out to the Deaf affected by crime because I now know that the kind of life I've been blessed with is an inspiration to them. [Testimony by Scott DeLoach, Executive Director of Deaf Prison Ministries Network]

The "C" Dorm

This month, we'd like to introduce you to the "C" Dorm. Healing Hands Ranch has three dorms and our "C" dorm is our largest dorm. This dorm has two bedrooms, a kitchen and living area, and a large bathroom. This dorm can accomodate between 5 residents comfortably. It has a large covered porch as shown in the picture and the porch faces the private lake.

The "C" dorm is one of the buildings at Healing Hands Ranch that needs to be rehabilitated. The kitchen and bathroom are very old and needs to be totally remodeled. One of the bedrooms needs to be converted into a laundry room with storage closets for the residents to store their personal belongings. We are looking for an individual or a church that would be interested in sponsoring this dorm. Sponsoring a building at Healing Hands Ranch means that you or your church will take up the initative to rehabilitate the building. If you are interested in sponsoring the "C" dorm, please contact us with your inquiry..

Healing Hands Ranch has a goal to foster trust and responsibility among its residents. All incoming residents will initially live in the "C" dorm and learn to share the space with their roommates. As each resident becomes more responsible, they are promoted to the "B" dorm which is smaller and has fewer roommates. Then towards the end of their program, they are promoted to the "A" dorm which is a one bedroom apartment sized dorm to facilitate the transition from Healing Hands Ranch to the real world.
